Mineral oils, which are also used in vehicle engines, consist of a combination of petroleum and various additive chemicals.

Oil consists of the remains of plants and animals in the seas after they have decomposed. After these remains have rotted on the seabed for millions of years, only oily substances remain. Oily substances that remain under layers of mud and large rock also turn into oil and gas. Therefore, oil, which is the raw material of motor oils, will not deteriorate by waiting, and products such as motor oil produced from it will not deteriorate by waiting.

So why do some manufacturers state that their products have a shelf life of 5 years? The answer to this question may be that they want to break their ties with the questions or problems about the oil they produced 5 years ago. Although the term 5 years shelf life is used, the expiry date is not used on motor oils in general. According to commercial laws, this information must be included in all products with an expiration date. This information also tells us that engine oils do not have a shelf life and can always be used when stored without being exposed to extreme temperatures.

In general, engine oils do not have an expiration date. The reason for this is that engine oils are not from the product group that deteriorates by stagnation. The date information on engine oils is the date the oil enters the production line. Some manufacturers specify the shelf life of motor oils as 5 years and write this on the labels on the package.

In short, there is no expiration date in general motor oils. If we take into account the shelf life of 5 years stated by some manufacturers, we can say that engine oils can be poured into the crankcase for 5 years from the production date on them.

Petrol, which is the main ingredient of motor oil, is a substance that has been waiting under the ground for millions of years and does not deteriorate. For example, a motor oil with a viscosity of 5W-30 means an oil that can be used at outdoor temperatures between -30 degrees and +35 degrees.

The viscosity value of motor oils is considered as thin oil and thick oil among the people. As the oil gets thinner, the viscosity, that is, the viscosity value, decreases, and as the oil gets thicker, the viscosity value increases. For example, 20W-50 with a higher viscosity value, 10W-40 with a lower viscosity value, such as 5W-30, is thicker and has a higher resistance to fluidity.

If you put engine oil with a lower viscosity than it should be (the popular term is thin), the engine of your vehicle may leak oil, leak from the piston rings to the combustion chamber or from the gasket to the outside of the engine.

If you put engine oil with higher viscosity (thick) oil than it should be, it will be difficult for all parts of the engine to lubricate. The oil pump will be forced, the mechanical parts working with oil pressure will work later.

In summary, unless problems such as oil leakage occur in the engine, it is important to use oil with the viscosity recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.

The letter "L" next to the "S" indicates that the oil is an "L" class oil in a gasoline vehicle. At the same time, this oil can be easily used as a CF class oil in a diesel vehicle.
