  • What is the Shelf Life of Engine Oils?
Mineral oils, which are also used in vehicle engines, consist of a combination of petroleum and various additive chemicals. Oil consists of the remains of plants and animals in the seas after they have decomposed. After these remains have rotted on the seabed for millions of years, only oily substances remain. Oily substances that remain under layers of mud and large rock also turn into oil and gas. Therefore, oil, which is the raw material of motor oils, will not deteriorate by waiting, and products such as motor oil produced from it will not deteriorate by waiting. So why do some manufacturers state that their products have a shelf life of 5 years? The answer to this question may be that they want to break their ties with the questions or problems about the oil they produced 5 years ago. Although the term 5 years shelf life is used, the expiry date is not used on motor oils in general. According to commercial laws, this information must be included in all products with an expiration date. This information also tells us that engine oils do not have a shelf life and can always be used when stored without being exposed to extreme temperatures.
  • Where is the expiry date written on motor oils?
In general, engine oils do not have an expiration date. The reason for this is that engine oils are not from the product group that deteriorates by stagnation. The date information on engine oils is the date the oil enters the production line. Some manufacturers specify the shelf life of motor oils as 5 years and write this on the labels on the package. In short, there is no expiration date in general motor oils. If we take into account the shelf life of 5 years stated by some manufacturers, we can say that engine oils can be poured into the crankcase for 5 years from the production date on them.
  • Is it important that the engine oil is of current production?
We can directly answer this question by saying no. Petrol, which is the main ingredient of motor oil, is a substance that has been waiting under the ground for millions of years and does not deteriorate. The additives used in engine oil are chemical and do not degrade them. Therefore, the current production of the oil will not provide any additional benefit to the consumers.
  • Which oil should I use for my vehicle?
The manufacturer of your vehicle determines which oil you should use in your vehicle by putting the engine through various tests. In these tests, the manufacturer takes into account the current emission standards as well as the performance criteria. In summary, the vehicle manufacturer decides which oil you should use in your vehicle and writes it in your vehicle's user manual. We also recommend that you use the oil specified by the vehicle manufacturer. What we mean by the oil determined by the manufacturer is not the brand, but the oil that meets the viscosity and required performance class and the manufacturer's approval. For example, if the manufacturer recommends an API SN class 5W-30 viscosity, MB-Approval 229.31 approved engine oil, you can search in this way and choose any brand you like.
  • What is Viscosity?
Viscosity is the resistance of liquids to flow, that is, to fluidity. Also called opacity. Liquids with low viscosity have high viscosity. The most important factor for viscosity is the attractive forces between its molecules. Viscosity in motor oils is expressed as 5W-30, 10W-40. W here means winter, and it symbolizes that the number before it shows - degrees, and the number after it shows + degrees. For example, a motor oil with a viscosity of 5W-30 means an oil that can be used at outdoor temperatures between -30 degrees and +35 degrees.
  • What is the fineness and thickness of engine oil?
The viscosity value of motor oils is considered as thin oil and thick oil among the people. As the oil gets thinner, the viscosity, that is, the viscosity value, decreases, and as the oil gets thicker, the viscosity value increases. For example, 20W-50 with a higher viscosity value, 10W-40 with a lower viscosity value, such as 5W-30, is thicker and has a higher resistance to fluidity.
  • Does using oil of wrong viscosity damage the vehicle?
If you put engine oil with a lower viscosity than it should be (the popular term is thin), the engine of your vehicle may leak oil, leak from the piston rings to the combustion chamber or from the gasket to the outside of the engine. If you put engine oil with higher viscosity (thick) oil than it should be, it will be difficult for all parts of the engine to lubricate. The oil pump will be forced, the mechanical parts working with oil pressure will work later. In summary, unless problems such as oil leakage occur in the engine, it is important to use oil with the viscosity recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.
  • What Do The Numbers On Engine Oils Like 5W-30, 10W-40 Mean?
Number blocks such as 10W-60, 0W-30, separated by the letter W, represent SAE class viscosity. You can read what the viscosity means in the related title.
  • What is BMW LongLife-04 approval in engine oil?
With the introduction of the E90 and E87 series with diesel particulate filters, the need for the new BMW Longlife-04 engine oil has increased. By using only BMW Longlife-04 engine oil, the operation of the diesel particulate filter with low fuel consumption can be guaranteed for the entire service life of the vehicle. Quantitatively new additives added to this engine oil contribute to less ash formation during fuel combustion and thus prevent clogging of the particulate filter by ash particles. This engine oil is primarily recommended for diesel engines with particulate filters, but is also excellent for gasoline engines. The BMW Longlife-04 engine oil specification also includes the characteristics of Longlife-01 and Longlife-98 oils. The use of Longlife-04 oils in petrol engines is only permitted in European countries (EU plus Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein).
  • What does API SL CF mean?
API; Performance class approval is the initials of the American Petroleum Institute. The letter "S" in SL CF indicates that it will be used in spark ignition, that is, gasoline engines (spark ignition), the letter "C" indicates that it will be used in compression-ignition, that is, diesel engines (compressed ignition). As the letter "S" is in front in the API SL/CF example, it means that this oil is recommended to be used primarily in gasoline vehicles. The letter "L" next to the "S" indicates that the oil is an "L" class oil in a gasoline vehicle. At the same time, this oil can be easily used as a CF class oil in a diesel vehicle. Gasoline engines: (min. performance) SA SB SC SD SE SF SG SH SJ (max. performance) For diesel engines: (min. performance) CA CB CC CD CE CF (max. performance)
  • What does API SJ CF mean?
API; Performance class approval is the initials of the American Petroleum Institute. The letter "S" in SL CF indicates that it will be used in spark ignition, that is, gasoline engines (spark ignition), the letter "C" indicates that it will be used in compression-ignition, that is, diesel engines (compressed ignition). As the letter "S" is in front in the API SJ/CF example, it means that this oil is recommended to be used primarily in gasoline vehicles. The letter "J" next to the "S" indicates that the oil is a "J" class oil in a gasoline vehicle. At the same time, this oil can be easily used as a CF class oil in a diesel vehicle. API SJ/CF also represents the top API performance class for both petrol and diesel engines. Gasoline engines: (min. performance) SA SB SC SD SE SF SG SH SJ (max. performance) For diesel engines: (min. performance) CA CB CC CD CE CF (max. performance)

  • What is mineral oil?
These oils are produced entirely from petroleum. That's why they are called mineral oils. 15W-40 and 20W-50 oils are generally mineral grade oils. Synthetic oils are completely man-made oils. They are produced chemically in laboratories.
  • What is synthetic oil? Should we choose synthetic oil?
Synthetic oils we use in engine oils are the 'mineral-based synthetic oil' group classified as Group III by the industry. Real synthetic oils in the industry are the name given to Group IV (Poly-alpha-olefin) and Group V (Ester Synthetic) oils. Since these oils are quite expensive, they are used in racing applications or in specialized areas such as airplanes. To summarize, motor oils are the improved form of mineral base oils subjected to Group III processes with some additives. In addition to offering a much wider viscosity range than mineral oils, these oils also provide benefits such as better adhesion to metal surfaces. For this reason, choosing synthetic oils instead of mineral oils will be the right approach in terms of engine performance and engine life.
